Just a few steps from the Kalsa district and the Foro Italico, at the mouth of the Oreto River and close to the sea of Palermo’s South Coast, you’ll find MMV: a cultural hub, gathering place, and bar-bistrot set inside a charming former railway station, surrounded by a large garden cooled by the coastal breeze.The Ecomuseum offers late afternoon guided tours through its exhibition space. Through stories, photo albums, and artistic videos, our crew has been sharing the recent history of the South Coast for years. The experience also includes a drink at LIDO bar-bistrot.

The tour lasts approximately one hour and will be led by one of the young members of the Mare Memoria Viva crew, who created and maintain this museum with passion and expertise.
Mare Memoria Viva is many beautiful things combined: an ecomuseum that tells the story of Palermo and its sea through memories and artistic works on the city's coastal landscape; a cultural, educational, and environmental center; a garden—a space for gathering, conversation, and meetings.
The venue is the former Sant'Erasmo Locomotive Depot, built in 1886. It is a large pavilion with a pagoda roof, cast iron pillars with Art Nouveau capitals, and surrounded by a large garden that was once part of a seaside railway complex.
We are the only urban ecomuseum in southern Italy that tells the story of Palermo's coast through the voices of residents and artists, a laboratory museum that offers ecological and cultural practices on the sea and the city.
The Ecomuseum's "collection" is an audiovisual archive of photographs, videos, interviews, documents, testimonies, maps, and works by artists, composing a comprehensive history of the urban coastal landscape and its transformations from the postwar period to the present. The multimedia exhibits symbolically move from the sea to the land, from the seabed of the Gulf of Palermo to the concrete covering the Conca d'Oro, told through the stories of people and places, animals, plants, and buildings. The Oreto River flows through the center, with a section dedicated to its care and its flora and fauna.
